Oil–easily one of the most polarizing words in the language of skincare. But why? Much like carbohydrates and fat in food, oil got a really bad rep in the skincare world in the ‘90s and ‘00s. You couldn’t walk down an aisle of skincare products without seeing words like “oil-free” splattered across every kind of product ranging from cleanser to eye cream to moisturizer. As a society, we were obsessed with products being oil-free because we directly associated (and blamed!) oil for breakouts and a greasy T-zone. And how could you blame us– we were practically spoon fed this information from the most trusted, global brands.

Fast forward to right now, and there isn’t a more trendy word: cleansing oils, treatment oils, hydrating oils, serum oils, vitamin C oils…you can’t escape them! And you shouldn’t because they’re really wonderful for your skin, no matter what skin type you have. Facial oils serve as a conduit, delivering high impact vitamins, minerals, and amino acids directly and quickly into the dermis allowing our skin to drink up all the benefits, whereas it takes a thick cream moisturizer much longer penetrate and deliver the same nutrients. And just like with food, oils in skincare and fats in food were never the problem… the problem is with the fake chemicals and compounds and that little addictive substance called refined sugar, but that’s a whole different story.

Of course, it’s all about choosing the right oil for your skin type. Most of the people I know who still live in fear of facial oils are nervous that they will cause them to break out, or become even oilier. But I assure you just like I assure my friends–there are oils out there that won’t clog your pores and even help control the production of sebum, namely our first ingredient in our MARA Universal Face Oil, moringa.

If you tend to suffer from break outs and oily skin, you need to stick to oils that are non-comedogenic (ie: won’t clog pores) and have a low comedogenic score, preferably in the 0-2 range. Our main ingredient in our Algae + Moringa Universal Face Oil is, yep, you guessed it, moringa seed oil. Our first ingredient is not only non-comedogenic, it also has been touted as a natural way to help reduce the appearance of acne and future breakouts, thanks to it’s high antimicrobial and skin-purifying properties. And example of a not-so-good oil to use on your face if you’re prone to breakouts? Coconut oil gets a four out of five on the comedogenic scale, which means using it can definitely clog your pores and lead to breakouts, even if you’re only using it to remove your makeup. Other ingredients in our product include kalahari melon, baobab, bilberry, sunflower, and grape seed oil–all of which fall at or below a comedogenic ranking of two.

The moral of the story here is that you should absolutely be using a face oil in your skincare routine. Start out small by adding a few drops to your nighttime moisturizer and start reaping the wonderful, hydrating, age-defying benefits of facial oils! Shop our Algae + Moringa Universal Face Oil here.
